Youtube and the Youths

Social Media defines the generation we're living today. Never before in all of human history have we, as individuals, had full and total control over our self-image and how it is being portrayed. And Youtube, being the biggest video-based platform available, plays a very important role in this new age of instant connectivity. Youtube is created by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim in 2005. at first, youtube is just a website on the internet filled with meaningless content, But during the mid-2000's Youtube started to gain traction thanks in part to a growing number of influencers that are now known as youtubers. Tyler Oakley, Shane Dawson, and Smosh are some of the first YouTubers to gain the public's interest. And fast forward 10 years youtube has now grown into a 70 billion dollar company, with 5 billion videos being watched every single day. Because of this and a shift in how traditional media views these creators, youtube has now become a very lucrative market for advertising giving these creators a lot of money.

This is the problem with youtube. how it portrays success and wealth. kids who are in schools are seeing all of these 20-somethings influencers with big houses, brand deals, and Gucci slides reach success and wealth while also being a college drop out. and these kinds of creators are being role models for kids who aspire to be like them. And now thanks in part to this the number of college dropouts has been steadily rising.

The problem isn't how much money they make, its that a lot of these kids do not realize how unstable a career in youtube really is. one scandal, beef, TMZ video can literally make or break your youtube career, and without a proper degree or a plan b, these people are in a very risky financial position. and not to mention those who do decide to drop out of their education but did not make it in the youtube world.

I'm definitely not saying all youtube that all YouTubers are evil pricks who don't deserve their wealth success and the amount of attention that they got. in fact, a lot of YouTubers are genuinely good, kind and is fit to become role models. Youtube is a platform for authenticity, the whole point of youtube is that the one who makes these videos are people, real people not some big budgeted studio and it's a good thing that people are given the platform to spread their message to a larger audience. and there has been a lot of positive messages being spread across youtube by influencers being honest and transparent through their content. So, I guess it's up to us to decide what kind of message is being spread and which kind of people should be given the platform to spread it.

And that's the tea, sis.
